High court dismisses plea for compensation in Muthanga incident

Kochi: The writ petition filed by the tribal activist CK Janu and 92 others were dismissed by the Kerala High Court yesterday. They had filed a writ petition before the court demanding a detailed investigation of the Muthanga incident and the custodial torture so that they are able to get compensation from the govt.
High court judge Justice R Basant, who considered the plea however, partially allowed further action on the petitions filed by 8 children who were seriously injured in police action. The controversial eviction took place on Feb 19, 2003 . It was a police action intended to chase away the tribals who had forcibly occupied some areas of land in the Muthanga sanctuary. The incident had claimed the lives of a Tribal and a policeman.
Meanwhile the government informed the court that the state was willing to do the needful to compensate the victims.Court directed the state to appoint a commission and collect data, secure a report through the state human rights commission and take appropriate and necessary action.
